ASSOCIATION OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGISTS

The Association of Research Methodologists is an interest group made up of academics, research professionals, or enthusiasts who need to be part of a progressive movement that is focused on empowering and connecting researchers in South Africa, Africa, and the world at large. This group is housed within the Association of Research Methodologists (ARM), an arm of the Global Centre for Academic Research.

Constitution

Constitution of ARM (Association for Research Methodologists) – An Entity of the Global Centre for Academic Research (PTY LTD), managed by its associated company, Costa Research Institute (CRI).

Article I: Name and Affiliation

Section 1: The name of this entity shall be Association for Research Methodologists (ARM), hereinafter referred to as ARM, and it operates as an entity under the Global Centre for Academic Research (PTY LTD), hereinafter referred to as GCAR.

Section 2: ARM is affiliated with GCAR and operates in accordance with the policies and guidelines set forth by GCAR.

Article II: Purpose and Objectives

Section 1: The purpose of ARM is to advance research methods across natural, social, and economic sciences within the framework established by GCAR.

Section 2:  ARM shall align its objectives with the broader mission of GCAR, which includes fostering academic research, promoting scholarly collaboration, and contributing to the development of knowledge.

Article III: Membership and Governance

Section 1:  Membership in ARM is open to scholars, researchers, and scientists who are affiliated with GCAR. Members shall abide by the rules and regulations set by GCAR.

Section 2: The governance of ARM is overseen by the Executive Committee, appointed and accountable to GCAR. The Executive Committee shall include representatives from different disciplines and institutions. Governance shall run for two years, thereafter the GCAR Community of Scholars and the ARM Members will nominate another governance structure.

Article IV: Responsibilities of GCAR

Section 1: GCAR shall provide administrative and logistical support to ARM, including but not limited to financial management, event coordination, and communication, through its administrative arm, Costa Research Institute (CRI).

Section 2: GCAR retains the authority to review and approve any constitutional amendments proposed by ARM.

Article V: Meetings and Events

Section 1: ARM shall organize regular meetings, seminars, colloquia, conferences, and other events in collaboration with GCAR.

Section 2: An annual calendar of events shall be established, incorporating GCAR’s overall academic calendar.

Article VI: Funding and Resources

Section 1: ARM may receive funding and resources from GCAR to support its activities, subject to the financial policies and guidelines of GCAR.

Section 2: ARM shall operate within the budget allocated by GCAR and submit regular financial reports as required.

Article VII: Amendments

Section 1: Proposed amendments to this constitution must be submitted to GCAR for review and approval.

Section 2: Amendments shall be enacted with the approval of GCAR.

Article VIII: Dissolution

Section 1: In the event of the dissolution of ARM, all remaining assets shall be transferred to GCAR for allocation to academic and research-related purposes.

Office Bearers of ARM

For the Association for Research Methodologists (ARM) as an entity of the Global Centre for Academic Research (PTY LTD), the following office bearer portfolios are suggested to ensure effective governance and operations:

President

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and vision for ARM.
  • Chair meetings of the Executive Committee.
  • Represent ARM in official capacities.
  • Collaborate with GCAR to align ARM’s goals with the broader organizational mission.

Vice President

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the President in their duties.
  • Assume the President’s role in their absence.
  • Oversee specific projects or initiatives as assigned.

Secretary

Responsibilities:

  • Record and maintain accurate minutes of meetings.
  • Manage correspondence and communications.
  • Maintain records of ARM membership.

Treasurer

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee financial matters and budgets.
  • Provide regular financial reports to GCAR and ARM.
  • Manage financial transactions and reimbursements.

Membership Coordinator

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the recruitment and retention of ARM members.
  • Coordinate membership benefits and services.
  • Address inquiries related to membership.

Event Coordinator

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and organize ARM events in collaboration with GCAR.
  • Coordinate logistics, venues, and speakers for conferences and seminars.
  • Ensure the successful execution of events.

Publications Manager

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the publication of research materials, newsletters, and other communications.
  • Manage the CRI XIV Preprint Server.
  • Manage activities of editorial board while retaining editor’s independence
  • Collaborate with GCAR on the dissemination of research outputs.

Committee Liaison

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate communication between ARM and its committees or working groups.
  • Support the establishment and functioning of committees.

GCAR Liaison Representative

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact between ARM and GCAR.
  • Communicate ARM’s needs and progress to GCAR.
  • Represent ARM in joint initiatives with GCAR.

Technology and Communications Officer

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the technological infrastructure for ARM, including the website and online platforms.
  • Oversee communication strategies, including social media and newsletters.

Ethics and Compliance Officer

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that ARM activities adhere to ethical standards and compliance requirements.
  • Provide guidance on ethical considerations in research.

Community Engagement Coordinator

Responsibilities:

  • Foster collaboration and engagement within the ARM community.
  • Facilitate networking opportunities for members.
  • Implement initiatives to strengthen the sense of community.

These suggested office bearer portfolios are designed to distribute responsibilities effectively and ensure that ARM operates in accordance with its goals and in collaboration with GCAR. Adjustments to these roles can be made based on the specific needs and size of ARM, as well as in consultation with GCAR.

PROFESSIONALISATION OF ARM MEMBERSHIP

The purpose of this section is to propund on the professionalisation of members of the Association of Research Methodologists. Establishing professional designations within ARM based on attendance and participation can help recognize and incentivize members for their commitment and contributions. Here are four hierarchical levels for ARM:

ARM Associate Member

Requirements:

  • Attend a minimum number of 12 ARM events, such as seminars, colloquia, or conferences.
  • Demonstrated interest in research methodologies.

 

Benefits:

  • Access to ARM resources, newsletters, and event notifications.
  • Eligibility for ARM networking events.
  • Event Notifications: Receive timely notifications and updates about upcoming ARM events, conferences, and activities.
  • Recognition as ARM Associate Member: Be recognized as an ARM Associate Member in official communications and publications.

CRITERIA FOR ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP

The criteria for ARM Associate Membership are designed to ensure that members engage with ARM’s community, demonstrate an interest in research methodologies, and contribute positively to the association. This entry-level membership provides a foundation for further involvement and advancement within ARM.

  • Participation in Discussions: Actively participate in discussions during ARM events by asking questions, sharing insights, and engaging with fellow members.
  • Demonstrated Interest in Research Methodologies: Express a genuine interest in the field of research methodologies, as evidenced by participation in relevant discussions, workshops, or training sessions.
  • Completion of ARM Orientation or Introduction Program: Complete an orientation or introduction program organized by ARM to familiarize Associate Members with the organization’s mission, goals, and community.
  • Submission of a Brief Introduction and Research Interests: Provide a brief introduction and outline research interests to facilitate networking and collaboration within the ARM community.
  • Commitment to Professional Development: Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of research methodologies.
  • Adherence to ARM Code of Conduct: Adhere to the ARM Code of Conduct, demonstrating professionalism, respect, and ethical behavior in all ARM-related activities.

ARM Member

An ARM (Association for Research Methodologists) Member is an individual who has met specific criteria and demonstrated a significant commitment to and engagement with the goals and activities of ARM. ARM Members actively contribute to the advancement of research methodologies within the framework established by the Global Centre for Academic Research (GCAR). ARM Members are individuals who have demonstrated a deeper level of commitment and contribution to ARM’s community and objectives. This level recognizes members who actively engage in the association’s activities and contribute significantly to the advancement of research methodologies.

Requirements:

  • Satisfy the criteria for ARM Associate Member.
  • Active participation in ARM events, including asking questions, contributing to discussions, or presenting research.

 

Benefits:

  • Become eligible for leadership roles within ARM, such as committee chair or event coordinator.
  • Receive recognition as an ARM Member in ARM publications and communications.
  • Participate in decision-making processes and contribute to shaping ARM’s strategic direction.
  • Access enhanced networking opportunities with fellow Members, Fellows, and Distinguished Fellows.
  • Receive priority consideration for involvement in ARM initiatives and special projects.

 

CRITERIA FOR ARM MEMBERSHIP

  • Fulfil the criteria for ARM Associate Membership.
  • Demonstrate continued active participation in ARM events, including seminars, colloquia, and conferences.
  • Contribute meaningfully to discussions during ARM events by providing insights, sharing experiences, or presenting relevant research findings.
  • Present research findings at ARM conferences or contribute to ARM-affiliated publications.
  • Take on leadership roles or actively contribute to ARM initiatives, committees, or working groups.
  • Provide mentorship or support to Associate Members, sharing expertise and guidance in research methodologies.
  • Publish research in journals, preprints, or other outlets affiliated with ARM.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development activities related to research methodologies.
  • Collaborate with the Global Centre for Academic Research (PTY LTD) on joint initiatives or activities aligned with ARM’s goals.
  • Adhere to ARM’s Code of Conduct, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and ethical behavior in all ARM-related activities.
  • Fulfil any membership dues associated with becoming an ARM Member. 

ARM Fellow

An ARM (Association for Research Methodologists) Fellow is an esteemed designation bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated exceptional and sustained contributions to the field of research methodologies within the framework established by the Global Centre for Academic Research (GCAR). ARM Fellows are recognized leaders in the academic community, playing a significant role in shaping the direction and impact of ARM. This designation signifies a high level of expertise, leadership, and dedication to the advancement of research methods.

Requirements:

  • The individual must be an active ARM Member in good standing.
  • Demonstrate sustained and substantial contributions to ARM over an extended period.
  • Have taken on leadership roles within ARM, such as committee chair, event organizer, or serving on the Executive Committee.
  • Show evidence of impactful research contributions, including presentations at ARM conferences, publications in ARM-affiliated outlets, and recognition within the academic community.
  • Provide mentorship and support to other ARM Members and Associate Members, contributing to the development of the ARM community.
  • Collaborate with the Global Centre for Academic Research (GCAR) on joint initiatives and activities, aligning ARM’s goals with the broader mission of GCAR.
  • Continue to engage in professional development activities, staying current with advancements in research methodologies.
  • Uphold ARM’s Code of Conduct, demonstrating exemplary professionalism, integrity, and ethical behavior.

  • Leadership Roles within ARM: Have actively taken on leadership roles within ARM, such as serving on the Executive Committee, leading committees, or organizing major events.
  • Research Impact: Showcase a substantial impact on the field of research methodologies through presentations at ARM conferences, publications in ARM-affiliated outlets, and recognition within the academic community.
  • Mentorship and Support: Provide mentorship and support to ARM Members and Associate Members, contributing to the professional development and growth of the ARM community.
  • Collaboration with GCAR: Demonstrate a collaborative and synergistic relationship with the Global Centre for Academic Research (GCAR), actively participating in joint initiatives and aligning ARM’s goals with the broader mission of GCAR.
